DISPATCH · WEDNESDAY EVENING · WK 20

Welcome back. Tonight, seven things worth your time.

Quiet on the wider front, noisy in the survival corner. Rust's new wipe goes long, EVE's null-sec map redrew itself overnight, and Iron Gate dropped a dev post worth reading carefully. Below: the three Sherpa would lead with — and the rest of what moved today, in case you want to skim.

tonight's notes

from Sherpa

The day moved on its hinges. A wipe landed at noon on the Eastern shards and the population graph did what wipe-day graphs do — a spike that will hold for forty-eight hours and then settle. Nothing surprising in the shape. The interesting thing is who showed up: returning players are deeper than usual, and they are buying upgraded server slots at a rate the studio probably did not forecast.

Elsewhere, a soft tremor in EVE that nobody is quite sure how to read yet. A coalition that has been quiet since last autumn moved nine titans into a system that holds nothing. Either a bluff or a tell — worth a glance, not a panic.

Three picks below are the ones to read first. Four more things changed today — listed at the bottom — but they did not need to be top of mind.

WHAT TO READ FIRST · IN ORDER

Three things worth your time today.

01

Rust's monthly wipe lands long. Population settles 18% above forecast.

FILED UNDER · RUST · WIPE DAY · FACEPUNCH

A wipe-day pop spike is normal. A wipe-day pop spike that holds into Sunday is not. The dispatch is filing this as the first quiet sign of a returning audience — and Facepunch's quarterly numbers will read accordingly.

02

Nine titans repositioned in null. EVE's coalitions are stirring again.

A move this loud, this early, in a system this empty, is rarely the actual play. The real one will land in a system that actually matters — that's the one to wait for.

03

Iron Gate hints at a Valheim biome you can sail to but probably should not.

FILED UNDER · VALHEIM · DEV BLOG · IRON GATE

A blog post written in the studio's usual half-poem half-patchnote register. Three lines worth reading carefully — there is a date hidden in the second paragraph that will mean something in roughly six weeks.

Four more things changed — worth a look, but Sherpa would not have led with them. read the full feed →
TODAY'S DATA DROP · DAILY AT 17:00 EDITION No. 198

Steam review velocity, last 24 hours

The interesting movement is at the bottom: Conan Exiles is down 41% on a day with no patch, no news, and no event. Something is going wrong in the comments. Sherpa is reading.

REVIEWS PER HOUR · % CHANGE vs 7-DAY AVG
Rust
+412%
Valheim
+38%
EVE Online
+22%
Mount & Blade II
+3%
FFXIV
−9%
ARK: Survival
−24%
Conan Exiles

Rust's spike is wipe day. Conan's drop is not. That is the chart in one sentence.

THE ASCENT · WEEKDAY MORNINGS No. 198

On the games you cannot finish, only inhabit.

There is a kind of game review you cannot really write while playing the game. It needs the year after — the strange Tuesday in April when you load it back up and discover the meta has moved without you, the prices on the market have re-set themselves to something you do not recognize, and a clan you used to know has dissolved into the air.

This is the territory the dispatch is interested in. Not the launch week. Not the verdict. The slow weather of a world that keeps moving whether you log in or not.

Three things stirring. None of them breaking.

The dispatch flags movement Sherpa has noticed but has not yet been able to verify. Treat as weather, not headlines.
